They say that each teacher has his booklet. This popular saying in Spain reflects the heterogeneity of the best teachers in this country during 2020. And, despite the fact that we have lived through a year marked by the pandemic, educators have adapted and continued to move forward in their profession . But some have done better than others. For this reason, Paola de la Cruz, Alicia Tojeiro, Rafael Bailón, Manuel Flores and Javier Cachón have been awarded – each in its category – with the Educa Abanca Awards, which recognize the best teachers in Spain.
Thus, in the fourth edition of the aforementioned awards, Paola de la Cruz, who works at the Dinoschool Center, located in the municipality of Torrente (Valencia), has been named by the Committee for Baremation of Merits as the best teacher in Infant Education. She and she have done it by obtaining a score of 92 points, taking 14 points ahead of the second classified, Ana María González, a teacher from the town of Rota (Cádiz).
The teacher Paola, however, was not the only one awarded. In the Primary category, teacher Alicia Tojeiro (Vigo, 1978) has been named the best. And it is that the fifth grade teacher of the Plurilingual CEIP Isidro Parga Pondal (Oleiros, La Coruña) has obtained a score of 108 points. The methodology used by the teacher is to “listen with the heart,” the teacher explained to Efe, adding that “the teacher who has to go to school happily is the first one, so that he can transmit that illusion.

Perhaps, the professor of Language and Literature, Rafael Bailón, feels that joy, every day, when he goes to his workplace, the Diego de Siloé IES, located in Íllora (Granada). His work with the Secondary and Baccalaureate students has led him to be awarded the Best Teacher in Spain 2020 Award in that category.
The teacher has obtained a score of 109 points and, for this reason, the Education delegate of the Granada Board, Ana Berrocal, has congratulated him and has valued his “ability to reinvent teaching in these difficult circumstances that we are going through, doing use of technology to actively involve our students and approach their concerns, encouraging them to participate through language and literature on issues as relevant as bullying ”.
FP and Universities
However, the educational platform EDUCA and the ABANCA Social Work not only reward the best Infant, Primary and Secondary teachers, but also value the work of Vocational Training (FP) and university teachers.
For this reason, Manuel Flores, VET professor at IES El Arenal, in Dos Hermanas (Seville), has been declared the best in that category, according to the Committee for Baremation of Merits. The teacher, in November, assured in an interview for his educational center that “VET is in a good moment, but this does not exempt us from continuing to improve”. Because of that spirit of nonconformity, this educator has been awarded.
In the category of best university professor in 2020, the winner was another Andalusian professor. In this case it is Javier Cachón, professor and coordinator of the didactic area of corporal expression at the University of Jaén. The score obtained by the teacher is 117.
In any case, in a difficult year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, these five teachers have been awarded as the best in Spain. Each of them has taken home a commemorative statue, a diploma that accredits them as the best teachers in Spain in 2020 and a financial prize of 1,000 euros.
