The Spanish Brass training, in the interpretation mode, and Raquel García Tomás, in the composition, have been awarded this Wednesday with the 2020 National Music Awards, which are awarded annually by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and which are endowed with 30,000 euros each.
In the first case, the jury has distinguished in its ruling the “long history consolidated in more than 30 years of profession” of this metal quintet, “one of the most versatile and relevant on the national and international scene”, while in the secondly, the “interdisciplinary, innovative and risky character of a unique and unique compositional language” has been highlighted, which with its “experimental quality has known coSpanish Brass, founded in 1989 within the framework of the Young National Orchestra of Spain, is integrated by Carlos Benetó Grau (trumpet), Juanjo Serna Salvador (trumpet), Manuel Pérez Ortega (horn), Indalecio Bonet Manrique (trombone) and Sergio Finca Quirós (tuba).

Their musical activity inside and outside of Spain, with tours that have taken them to countries such as the United States, France and South Korea, is complemented by their educational and informative role for young instrumentalists and the organization of two international festivals dedicated to instruments metal: the Spanish Brass Alzira Festival and Brassurround, where prominent figures from all over the world meet every year.
With 26 albums published, among the works they have released are pieces by Salvador Brotons, César Cano, José Manuel López, Víctor Vallés and Javier Martínez Campos, among others. In addition, they accumulate among their distinctions other awards such as the First Prize of the 6th International Competition for Brass Quintets “Ville de Narbonne” (France) in 1996 or, more recently, the Espai Ter de Torroella de Montgrí Prize (Girona) in 2019.
On her side, Raquel García Tomás (Barcelona, 1984) is a composer specialized in interdisciplinary creation, with a doctorate from the Royal College of Music in London. Among her most outstanding projects are joint creations with the English National Ballet, the Royal British Society of Sculptors, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Dresdener Musikfestspiele.
In 2017 she was awarded the RNE Critical Eye Award in the Classical Music category and among her works, premiered in the most important national and international venues, include pieces such as DIDO Reloaded, produced by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació, or more recently the successful premiere in the 2018/2019 season of the Teatro Real his opera Je suis narcissist “, with a bookseller by H. Tornero and stage direction by M. Pazos.
She is currently nominated for the International Opera Awards 2020 in the World Premiere category.
The jury, chaired by the general director of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), Amaya de Miguel, has counted as vice president with the general deputy director of Music and Dance, Antonio Garde.
The following have served as vocals: soprano Raquel Andueza; Anna Caballé, writer, literary critic, university professor and president of the Classics and Modern Association; Montserrat Faura, director of the Torroella de Montgrí Music Festival; the musicologist Javier Marín López; Javier Menéndez, director of the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville; Félix Palomero, technical director of the National Orchestra and Choir of Spain, and Asier Polo, who was the previous National Prize for Performance Music.
